Way of the Cross: Station 12

Jesus dies on the Cross

This station brings us face-to-face with the finality of defeat.

Sometimes things don’t have a happy ending. We are beaten, humiliated, misunderstood or abandoned by the very people we love most in life and whom we thought also loved us. At that point, something in us dies. There is no going back to things as they were. Doors close in our hearts and the breath goes out of us. All we can do is to surrender to the dark. It is not a pretty moment. It takes all the energy we have.

For Reflection: Am I able to accept the daily deaths of life, both the great and the small, knowing that death is not the end of life, only the possibility for something new – in me and in the world around me?

Prayer: Jesus, give me the grace to accept whatever deaths come to me this day with all their pain and grief.
